Supplier Bar Coding

UFPC Supplier Bar Code Procedures

In 2009, bar coding remains an important part of the Yum! Brands supply chain and will continue to be supported by both UFPC and Yum! Brands. Our system’s bar coding procedures are outlined below.

GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) Assignment
Every item requires that a GTIN be assigned. The GTIN field has been added to the product data sheet and will be captured by UFPC Purchasing during the initial supplier item set up. UFPC Purchasing will communicate the GTINs to suppliers and store the GTINs in GPS (Global Pricing System). GTINs will be assigned and recorded in GPS for all proprietary Yum! Brands items, as well as for off-the-shelf items that bear usable bar codes.

GLN (Global Location Number) Assignment
Every approved production facility requires a GLN be assigned. UFPC Purchasing will also assume responsibility for communicating GLNs to the suppliers. Purchasing teams can look up the GLNs in the GPS research tool. UFPC Purchasing will assist suppliers that need GLNs for their facilities. GLNs that are in use will be visible in GPS.

Supplier Education
With nearly 100 percent of our system in compliance, bar coding has become part of our business culture. Suppliers are expected to maintain a level of expertise within their teams to maintain compliance on bar coding. We have developed materials to assist you with compliance. If you have specific questions, please direct them to barcode@ufpc.com. For general guidance, consult the following sources:

  1. We have written a thorough bar coding handbook for our business partners to use. The handbook provides a full explanation of the specifications and provides guidance on printing methods, best practices, the approval process and other topics. If you are an approved UFPC supply chain partner, you may request a PDF copy of the handbook at barcode@ufpc.com.
  2. We have worked closely with two bar coding vendors and provided them with detailed information about Yum! Brands’ bar coding requirements. Contact information for each of these vendors is listed below. Either of these vendors are capable of taking a new supplier through the entire process of complying with Yum! Brands’ bar code requirements. They will also be able to assist suppliers should they encounter difficulty with bar coding in the future.

Supplier Bar Code Approval Procedures

Case bar code approval
Bar codes are now an additional element in the overall outer packing requirements managed by the QA groups at Yum! Brands. The QA groups have been and will continue to be the final approver of all outer-case labeling. However, suppliers are ultimately responsible for making sure they meet all Yum! Brands requirements, so any consequences of an incorrect bar code may be borne by the supplier. Please direct any inquires about this process to barcode@ufpc.com.

Pallet bar code approval
As is the case with bar codes, suppliers are responsible for making sure they meet all Yum! Brands pallet bar code requirements. Suppliers will be responsible for self-checking this requirement.
